Scale changes what the owner needs to be doing.
More volume is going to steadily pull the owner away from interacting with all but the largest clients. The owner will spend more and more time supervising employees, maintaining relationships with key suppliers, and working on the strategic level of the business.
For some people, this is exactly what they’ve always wanted. For others, it will take them away from the things they actually enjoy about their company.
But there’s no doubt that scaling up requires the owner to transition from manager to CEO, and that is more attractive to some people than others.
When you decide you scale, consider what you will be doing as a result.
